How to Change Your Limiting Identity

The 3-Step Identity Reset

This week in my cohort program, I had two people tell the group that they “don’t have personality”, “awkward in front of people”, to which the rest of the group enthusiastically pushed back:

“You light up when you say this…”

“I feel your energy even as you’re sitting in the dark!”

“I actually feel quite drawn to you, not awkward at all”

This experience shows that our view of ourselves may not be how others view us. So the question to ask ourselves is this: what limiting beliefs do we have about our identity? And how might we grow if we let it go?

Grounding perspective:

Your identity is a story built from selective evidence (time to select the ones we want)

The 3-Step Identity Reset

1. Name the limiting belief

“I’m the kind of person who _____” or “I am not_____”

2. Disprove it with evidence

Ask: “Where is this not true?”

Find:

  • Exceptions

  • Small wins

  • What others have seen in you

This is where we select the “right” evidence that serves you.

3. Replace it with a working belief + behavior

“I’m becoming someone who _____”

Then prove it to yourself:

  • One commitment “I will do _____ the next time xyz happens”

  • Repeat consistently
